The extreme vulnerability of persons suffering from mental illness against rights violations can be stopped only if they know their rights and are aware of what treatment received is correct and which is not only incorrect but even reportable. Notwithstanding, given the specific conditions of persons with severe and prolonged mental health challenges- whose concentration and learning ability is often limited due to illness symptoms and/or as side effect of medication- there is a need of an easy to use learning tool for this collective.
This is why we developed a tailor made, accessible board game addressed at empowering service users to exercise their rights. The game was designed for professional use in workshops and trainings with persons with prolonged and severe mental illness. Thanks to its attractive design and fun activities, it has proven to be a highly enjoyable learning tool for the clients.
The game is composed of five different activities cards related to rights of mental health services users, including daily situations and attitudes, which involve violations of these rights at health and social services facilities. For instance, in the “GIVE YOUR OPINION” card the players are asked to comment on a statement reflecting a stigmatizing belief or a prejudice that may conduct to rights violations. In the “ACT OUT” card the players are offered a short description of a situation that involves a right violation and are asked to improvise a dialogue between the characters.
